Useimmilla meistä on käytössään varsin rajallinen määrä rahaa. Useimpien toiveena on myös elää mahdollisimman onnellista elämää. Miten pakollisista menoista yli jäävät rahat siis tulisi käyttää, jotta ne edistäisivät onnellisuutta parhaalla mahdollisella tavalla?
Psykologian professori Thomas Gilovich Cornellin yliopistosta on tutkinut pitkään rahan ja onnellisuuden välistä suhdetta. Gilovichin tekemän tutkimuksen mukaan kokemukset lisäävät ihmisten onnellisuutta enemmän kuin uusien esineiden hankkiminen. Tavaroiden ostaminen tekee kyllä hetkellisesti onnelliseksi. Voisi kuvitella, että koska tavara on pysyvämpi kuin hetken kestävä elämys, tavara myös lisäisi onnellisuutta pidempään. Mutta asia onkin päinvastoin: uuden esineen tuoma ilo haihtuu melko nopeasti, kun taas uudet kokemukset, oppiminen ja elämykselliset hetket lisäävät onnellisuutta kauemmin. Rahat kannattaisikin käyttää tavaroiden sijaan esimerkiksi matkusteluun, taidenäyttelyssä käyntiin tai uuden taidon opetteluun.
Gilovich selittää asiaa ihmisen kyvyllä sopeutua. Sopeutuminen on välttämätön ja ihmisille tyypillinen piirre. Hyvä sopeutumiskyky kuitenkin tarkoittaa myös, että ympärillä oleviin tavaroihin tottuu helposti. Uusi laukku tai älypuhelin innostaa ja lisää tyytyväisyyttä vähän aikaa, mutta sen olemassaoloon tottuu nopeasti, ja onnellisuus palaa samalle asteelle kuin ennen ostosta. Tavaran pysyvyys siis pikemminkin vähentää sen onnellisuutta tuovaa vaikutusta. Hetken kestävistä elämyksistä taas tulee osa kokijan identiteettiä, sillä identiteettimme koostuu juuri kokemuksista ja muistoista. Ajan myötä negatiivisillakin kokemuksilla saattaa olla minäkuvaa vahvistava vaikutus.
Ihminen on myös sosiaalinen olento, ja yhdessä muiden kanssa vietetty aika jää mieleen. Siksi kokemukset lujittavat paremmin yhteenkuuluvuuden tunnetta kuin esineiden omistaminen. Jokainen tietää, että yhdessä koettu reppureissu lujittaa kaverusten välistä suhdetta enemmän kuin se, että kaverukset ostavat samanlaiset autot. Samanlaisia asioita kokeneilla tai samoja harrastuksia harrastavilla myös usein riittää juttua keskenään. Yhtä paljon – tai yhtä kiinnostavaa – keskustelua ei synny esineistä.
Lisäksi ihmisten taipumus vertailla itseään muihin on syynä siihen, miksi elämykset lisäävät onnellisuutta varmemmin kuin tavaran hankkiminen. Meidän on nimittäin helpompi vertailla materiaalisia saavutuksia kuin koettuja elämyksiä. Toisin sanoen naapurin uusi upea ruohonleikkuri herättää helpommin kateutta kuin naapurin käymä sukelluskurssi. Ja kateus on luonnollisesti este onnellisuuden tunteelle.
Psykologian professori Gilovich kehottaakin miettimään asiaa myös yhteiskunnallisesta näkökulmasta. Yleisen hyvinvoinnin kannalta ihmisiä olisi kannattavaa kannustaa esineiden ostamisen sijaan panostamaan aineettomiin, onnellisuutta lisääviin kokemuksiin ja harrastuksiin. Lisäksi työnantajien tulisi huolehtia työntekijöiden mahdollisuuksista viettää lomia ja päättäjien järjestää sopivia ajanviettopaikkoja.
